Sunday Round-Up: 9/11/11

11 Sep

Leave it to the old PS2 to bring in a cartload of games this week. Well, also leave it to buy 2 get 2 free sales to bring in the games. And also the fact that all these games were well less than $10 each. A good variety of games, and even a Wii title, fill out this week’s Round-Up. Check them out.

Barbarian
Playstation 2
Release Date: June 27th, 2002

The fighting genre is one of my favorite game genres around, and Barbarian is a 3D fighting game released by Titus. I remember the game caught my eye with it’s particularly catchy (at least to me) advertisement. The game itself is critically panned by most all critics, but I’ll be sure to give it a shot. Anyway, the big draw to the game was a brutal combat system and some character customization. Must not have been that good

Darkwatch
Playstation 2
Release Date: August 16th, 2005

Darkwatch is a PS2 FPS that actually looks particularly good to me. The main character is a half-vampire, or something like that, and he uses his hip powers to defeat evil… for some reason. I’m actually pretty excited to see this one, and online it says there is actually a sequel planned. Good reviews online make me more amped to see it in action.

Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore
Playstation 2
Release Date: October 25th, 2000

The Dead or Alive series has somehow slipped by me these past few years, and I’ve only spent a decent amount of time with the 3DS title Dimensions. I own the DOA 2 game for the DreamCast as well, but like I said, have not really frequented the series like I should have. The DOA series is known for it’s unique fighting system and cast of intriguing, and oftentimes scantily clad, female characters. Hardcore is an update to the original DC title, and includes updated visuals, characters, and, well, just about everything else.

 Destroy All Humans! 2
Playstation 2
Release Date: October 17th, 2006

Aliens running amok across Earth, taking humans for specimens, and frantic action made the first Destroy All Humans! game awesome. I am hoping the second game is just as good, and for the most part gamers think it’s alright. I’ve yet to play through the entirety of the first game, but we’ll see how this one goes.

 Gladiator: Sword of Vengeance
Playstation 2
Release Date: November 5th, 2003

Gladiator: Sword of Vengeance is supposed to be one of the goriest games released. Bloody battles and weapon-based combat make this game stand out. And I’m sure it’s going to suck balls, but we’ll give it a shot. For some reason this game looks like something my brother would really enjoy…

King of Fighter 2006
Playstation 2
Release Date: September 19th, 2006

So here’s a fun fact: The first KoF 3D game was King of Fighter: Maximum Impact, and the second game was released as Maximum Impact 2 over in Japan. But in America, we have King of Fighters 2006. The KoF series has always lived in the shadows of the far superior Street Fighter series, but Maximum Impact and 2006 are alright transitions into the 3D plane. I’ll be sure to give this a shot soon and see how it compares.

 Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks
Playstation 2
Release Date: September 16th, 2005

A Mortal Kombat RPG?! I couldn’t believe it either, but here it is. I’ve actually dabbled in this one already and actually thought it was a good action RPG. I’d like to get the game completed to play as Scorpion/Sub-Zero and see how the handle, but we’ll see. If you’re a fan of the Mortal Kombat fighters, especially MKII, then you should do yourself a favor and check out this great piece of fan service.

 Turok Evolution
Playstation 2
Release Date: August 26th, 2002

The Turok games have a fine place in my heart. I remember absolutely loving the first game on the Nintendo 64, and specifically remember all the cool cheats that you could enable. Actually, I think that’s the only way I actually beat that game… Anyway, the sequel, Seeds of Evil, and that sequel, Shadow of Oblivion, were awesome games in their own right too. I was surprised to see that Evolution was reviewed fairly well.

 Heavenly Guardian
Wii
Release Date: April 22nd, 2008

Lastly we have Heavenly Guardian for the Wii. I had been eying this title on the PS2 for some time now, and didn’t even know it was released (first, no less) on the Wii. The game is a 2D action shooter thingy, and honestly it looks like garbage. But I wanted to give the game a shot, mainly because it was only 3 bucks. Oh, and the cutesy art style could be entertaining.

Laters,
Jsick

Wow, that’s quite the haul, man. Can’t say I have played any of them, although I do remember liking one of the DOA games on the Dreamcast back in the day. Looking forward to your reviews on these.

I’m working on a video for Barbarian right now. I’ll get a more review’ish video later.
