Sunday Roundup: 4/1/12

01 Apr

You never know what you’re gonna find when you go into a dollar store. Sometimes you’ll find super cheap toys, other times you’ll find semi-stale candy that you hadn’t seen in years. Or sometimes you’ll find amazing NEW games for just $5!

PlayStation 2
Release Date: February 13th, 2007

Here’s a game I really know nothing about, other than hearing it’s garbage from my friends. Chulip is a game where you play to win over the affection of a certain someone you run across one day (or something like that). Having no real knowledge of the game, that’s all I can really say about it. Oh, and it has some of the strangest box art. And it STILL SEALED. Combine that with it’s mediocrity and here’s a game that I’ll never open!

Dokapon Journey
Release Date: April 14th, 2009

Here’s a game I know a bit more about than Chulip: Dokapon Journey can best be described as Mario Party with RPG elements. I’ve played the PS2 version of the game, and actually thought it was pretty damn cool. Your goal in the game is to defeat monster, earn gold, buy new equipment, and beat up on other players when you don’t have enough gold (or just for kicks). It works surprisingly well, but I’m curious to see if this DS version is any different. The Wikipedia page is quite vague…

Jeanne d’Arc
Release Date: August 21st, 2007

Here’s a game that is right up my ally: An RPG with factual historical roots (to a degree, of course). Jeanne d’Arc tells the story of Joan of Arc, a factual female warrior who fought during the Hundred Years War for France. The game is a tactical RPG that is apparently competent enough to garner praise from critics. I’d love to get into this one soon, but there’s plenty of other games I need to play. Also, this one is still in it’s factory sealed plastic as well.

Release Date: September 5th, 2006

The second PSP game this week, and the first of two classic titles I found for the system, is LocoRoco, an early release PSP puzzle game. The game has always intrigued me with its fun looking art style and unique brand of puzzle solving, but securing a prime looking edition was somewhat difficult. Fortunately GameStop of all placed turned up a great copy while in my travels this week. Here’s hoping my PSP library finally takes off with more worthwhile entries!

Monster Tale
Release Date: March 22nd, 2011

Almost a year after it’s initial release, and after picking up great reviews from critics, Monster Tale has finally made its way to me at a great price. The game is a pet raising/RPG hybrid title that many have praised for fantastic gameplay. A big ol’ quote on the front of the box says Nintendo Power thinks it’s the next great DS game. I definitely will be looking into this one, even if it is still factory sealed as well!

Release Date: February 26th, 2008

The second classic PSP title this week is Patapon, the rhythm game from Sony. I’ve been looking for this one for some time as well as LocoRoco, so the fact that I found them together makes it even better. I think the reason I wanted both this games was due to their being system exclusives as well as well received and in genres I care about. Oh, and the simple-yet-extravagant art styles of both certainly helps.

River King: A Wonderful Journey
PlayStation 2
Release Date: March 28th, 2006

The final $5 game this week as well as the final brand new, factory sealed game is River King for the PS2. As stated previously in these Sunday Roundups, I am on a sort of Harvest Moon frenzy as of late. Natsume, the game’s publisher, incorporated many gameplay elements from the Harvest Moon series into the River King games (which focus mainly on fishing instead of farming). The chances of me playing this one are low, and the fact that it’s sealed pretty much solidifies my resolve to not play.

Nice haul, dude. I have tried out Patapon and LocoRoco and both seem pretty unique. Just haven’t had the chance to get very far into them yet. That’s pretty impressive that you were able to find some of these for $5 new!

I want to try Patapon soon, but with work and all I might have to delay that one for a bit 😦
