Sunday Roundup: 4/8/12

08 Apr

A light week in terms of new games, but a great week when looking at what the games are! Both are PS1 titles. One is a lot more recognizable than the other, but the other is a big winner in my book.

Chocobo’s Dungeon 2
PlayStation
Release Date: November 30th, 1999

Chocobos are the yellow bird-like creatures from the Final Fantasy series that pop up in just about every version of the game and aid the player in some way or another. Chocobo’s Dungeon 2 turns the tables and lets the feathered beast star in its very own dungeon crawler. The game is relatively hard to find and a rarity among Final Fantasy games due to a limited release and not having the mainstream success of the numbered series. Also, I hear the game is on the crazy easy side when compared to other FF games, so maybe that was a turnoff for some gamers too. Either way, I’m happy to have the game sitting in my collection nearly 13 years after it’s initial release.

Spot Goes to Hollywood
PlayStation
Release Date: November 30th, 1996

Strangely this game was released on the same day as Chocobo’s Dungeon 2, just 3 years prior. Spot Goes to Hollywood is the sequel to Cool Spot for the Genesis/SNES in which you play as Spot, the one-time 7-Up soda mascot. Yes, I’m serious. I have very fond memories of Cool Spot on the SNES (I still rank it as one of the best games on the system. Seriously), so I was hoping this sequel would be up to par. Unfortunately it is no where near as awesome as the first game. I’ve already played through this one and can safely say stick with the first game and just forget this one even exists.

Laters,
Jsick

I didn’t even know there was a sequel to Cool Spot. I love that game and still own the SNES version. Bummer to hear it’s nowhere near as good though…
