Sunday Roundup: 12/16/12

16 Dec

New Games (12-16-12)A quick trip into Disc Replay and twenty bucks later I am the owner of six new video games.

Sometimes it’s just as simple as that. Like most other instances when I shop for games, I really only wanted two or three of these, but the allure of paying $10 more and getting three more games is just too good to pass up.

DDR X CoveDance Dance Revolution X
PlayStation 2
Release Date: September 16th, 2008
Purchased at: Disc Replay (Merrillville, IN – $4)

Well, go figure. DDRX is one of the final versions of the game to release on the PS2, which is well into it’s final years by the game’s release in 2008. Regardless, this version of the game actually incorporates some changes to the core formula for the series, something that hasn’t been done since the first release of the series on the PS2, DDRMax. I’ve yet to play this one, but I’m actually eager to get my hands (and feet) on this one.

Asterix and Obelix Kick Buttix CoverAsterix & Obelix: Kick Buttix
PlayStation 2
Release Date: June 18th, 2004
Purchased at: Disc Replay (Merrillville, IN – $3)

My only knowledge of this game and the source material comes from what I discovered from the box, and a video via ScrewAttack. At the nice price point of three dollars, I was intrigued. The game is an action/platformer that has you handling Caesar and the Romans. Not sure how historically accurate it’ll be, but it’s a solid enough premise for me.

Kessen II CoverKessen II
PlayStation 2
Release Date: September 26th, 2001
Purchased at: Disc Replay (Merrillville, IN – FREE)

My only interest in the Kessen series comes from the fact that the first game in the series was a launch game for the PS2. Really, that’s it. I don’t foray too deep into the strategy genre (unless it’s a Square Enix game, apparently), so I’ll likely not be playing this one at all. But there’s still one more game in the series out there to track down, and I honestly haven’t seen that game in the wild for some time now. Maybe I should have bought that earlier…

Midway Arcade Treasures 3 CoverMidway Arcade Treasures 3
PlayStation 2
Release Date: September 26th, 2005
Purchased at: Disc Replay (Merrillville, IN – $4)

And another series is complete! Midway Arcade Treasures 3 isn’t a particularly difficult game to find, but for this reason or that I’ve struggled to find a copy of the game for a decent price AND in nice condition. I thought Midway Arcade Treasures 2 was one of the best compilation games ever made, with the inclusion of Mortal Kombat II and a slew of other action games, so I found it odd they’d make a third one with all racing games. Granted some of these games are fantastic racers, like Offroad Thunder and Hydro Thunder, but I didn’t feel this compilation was near as good.

Oni CoverOni
PlayStation 2
Release Date: January 29th, 2001
Purchased at: Disc Replay (Merrillville, IN – $3)

Another example of a game that hasn’t been hard to spot but I’ve been unlucky in finding a decent looking copy. Oni has been on my radar to pick up every since the release of Grand Theft Auto III and I noticed the Rockstar logo on the cover. The game has little to nothing to do with the GTA series, but I think just because it’s a Rockstar game I have a fledgling interest in owning it. Costing less than five bucks helps too.

Pop'n Music CoverPop’n Music
Release Date: November 13th, 2009
Purchased at: Disc Replay (Merrillville, IN – $4)

Oh Pop’n Music, will you forever allude me? The Pop’n Music series has been around in Japan for years, and I first discovered the series during my DDR escapades in the early 2000s. Using a unique nine colored button controller, you have to hit notes in time with the beat much like in other rhythm games. The uniqueness comes from its blandness: you’re not playing the keyboard, or an instrument at all. You’re just hitting buttons. You’re simply making music by playing a video game. Anyway, this version of the game is nothing like that. Stay tuned this week and discover why you should avoid this at all costs.

Huh. I remember hearing about Oni back in the day, but I never realized it was a Rockstar game. Wonder if it’s any good…?

I feel like my brother’s friend enjoyed the game back when it came out. Does that mean it was actually any good and/or hold up to today’s standards? Heck no… perhaps I’ll get a Free Play in for it soon.
