The Recurring Bosscast: 017: Brotherly Love and the Super Nintendo

Hot off the heels of the reveal of the Xbox One, the Bosscast returns with another brand new episode!

This week Jett, Mat, and I are talking about the Super Nintendo and why it’s Jett’s favorite console of all time! You may have heard of some of the games on the console: Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Super Mario Kart, … a lot of “Supers”. We each pick our “Sleeper” hits on the SNES as well. I’m positive after this episode you’ll want to play SNES as bad as we all did!

Review: Anomaly 2

Anomaly 2 TitleIt was only two years ago that we were first shown just how fun a reverse tower-defense game could be with the release of Anomaly: Warzone Earth. Building mobile units to travel through a battlefield destroying powerful alien structures instead of defending stationary towers was a novel idea that gave the tower-defense genre a new layer of gameplay. With the release of Anomaly 2, 11 bit studios expands upon the “tower-offense” idea of the first game by adding a new transformation ability to the mix as well as a brand new storyline and deployable units to experience. Vault Play: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney ArtNearly five years have passed since we took on the role of Phoenix Wright, the up-and-coming defense attorney that shook the legal world back in 2005 on the Nintendo DS (2001 on the Game Boy Advance in Japan). Only a few months back we were graced with the announcement of a brand new Ace Attorney game from Capcom. Though Phoenix held his own in the fighting ring a la Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, getting back in the courtroom is where he’s most comfortable; cross-examining witnesses, finding contradictions, and spouting out catchphrase after catchphrase. The Recurring Bosscast: 016: Xbox One and Dog of Duty: Bark Ops

The Bosscast is back with a special episode discussing the reveal of Microsoft’s Xbox One!

Mat, Jett, and I thrown down our thoughts about the games (or lack there of), tech behind the console, and even the design choice of the box itself. There’s some positives and a lot of negatives from a group of gamers that feel left behind as Microsoft moves forward.

Gut Reaction to the Xbox One Reveal

Xbox One SystemFollowing the announcement of the successor to the Xbox 360 known as the Xbox One, reactions have been a jumbled collection of excitement, speculation of the future, questions about what was seen and what wasn’t seen, and a sense of wonder about the whole thing. So in other words, job well done to Microsoft for getting the community talking about their next box.

From a gamer’s standpoint however, I’m not entirely sure I’m on board at all with the Xbox One. My gut reaction is telling me to wait this thing about and see what the Xbox One delivers in the future, but as of right now there’s some questions I want answered. Read the rest of this entry »

Sunday Roundup Video Bonanza!!

I’ve uploaded the last five Sunday Roundups as videos on my YouTube channel. If you’re sick of reading my mountains of text about each game, why not listen to me talk about them instead? Here are a few videos to get you warmed up and acustomed to my unfortunate beautiful voice.

Sunday Roundup: 5/19/13

New Games (5-19-13)Special thanks go out this week to JJ I met over at Splitkick. He pointed me toward a special 25% off sale at the game store eStarland (who also have a dated looking website to order games).

I went nuts.

On top of that, I picked up a few games off Craigslist that I’ve been looking to purchase for years. Seriously, years! And each of them were fantastic prices. Read on, as there are quite a few games this week to browse.

Game Hunter’s Journal: Knowledge is Power

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 There is no Knowledge That is Not PowerBoiling down game collecting to its core leaves you with the essential elements of the hobby. Of course procuring games is one of these said elements. Key to the success of any fruitful collector is knowledge. Knowing about games, the series they belong to, the development staff behind them, and other useful information can turn you on to games you may not otherwise give a second thought to. Here are some tips for discovering your next favorite game in the sea of lesser known titles. Read the rest of this entry »

The Recurring Bosscast: 015: Jason and Jett Do Vegas

If only our adventures in Las Vegas were done up in a “Beavis and Butt-Head: Do America” feature film…

Alas we’re left with the otherwise excellent episode 15 of the Recurring Bosscast! Call it luck, fate, or sheer circumstance, but Jett and I happened to meet one another in America’s playground, Las Vegas! Mat unfortunately was left alone and cold as he was not in Vegas, and his girlfriend was in Iceland (which is much greener than Greenland, which is much cooler than Iceland. Go figure!)

This week’s topic was a damn good one: disappointing video game sequels! Mat and I have a scuffle over Final Fantasy VIII, I proclaim Mortal Kombat II as the pinnacle of the series, and there is very little love for Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sunday Roundup: 5/12/13

Two quick games this week, thanks to Groupon of all places. I’ve used the online coupon site before for this and that, and I’ve always seen game deals on there. It’s usually something like $10 – $20 off a somewhat new game (like right now they have Resident Evil 6 for $15). The site updates frequently, so I suppose if you’re in the market for some newish games on the cheap, you might get lucky. This week for me though, I found two games that are in a series near to my heart. And at a magnificent price!

Harvest Moon Animal Parade CoverHarvest Moon: Animal Parade
Wii
Release Date: November 12th, 2009
Purchased at: Groupon (Online – $35)

First up this week is Harvest Moon: Animal Parade on the Wii. Not only is this a Wii exclusive, it’s one of the new Harvest Moon games out there (not to mention the newest game in the series on the consoles). The Groupon I purchased included this game and the one below for just $35 total. The crazy thing is, I believe this game is around that place by itself brand new. So, needless to say this was a pretty good deal.

Harvest Moon Tree of Tranquility CoverHarvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility
Wii
Release Date: September 30th, 2008
Purchased at: Groupon (Online – $35)

The very first Harvest Moon game developed for the Wii, Tree of Tranquility came out prior to Animal Parade but both games are done in the same art style. Honestly, I expect the games to be identical to previous games in the series. By that I mean it’ll be about framing, wooing a woman, and starting a family. One more important thing to note about this Groupon deal: It also came with the plush duck from Animal Parade! A trend with Harvest Moon games is to release as a bonus item a stuffed animal from the series with each new game. My girlfriend Laura adores soft things as well as Harvest Moon, so this purchase was a no brainer. I believe we now collectively have a stuffed horse, duck, alpaca, sheep, and cow. Not to mention most every Harvest Moon game 🙂
