Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows

09 Sep

untitledWhen referencing the greatest beat ‘em ups of all time, a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game inevitably shows up on the list. Whether it’s the excellent Arcade Game or Turtles in Time, chances are Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael make the cut.—so it makes sense people get excited when a new TMNT-themed brawler is announced. Based on the Nickelodeon animated series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is the newest game to feature the heroes—and while die hard Turtle fanatics will love the adherence to the source material, sloppy controls, glitches, and many minor nuisances keep the game from being as memorable an experience as the earlier games.

You know, I actually enjoyed the game when it was working. When you were flipping over bad guys, delivering death blows with Leo’s swords, slamming a bad guy between two turtle shells, and generally kicking ass the game was really fun. Hell, even upgrading your characters and wandering through the Turtles HQ was cool. but a multitude of glitches, problematic multiplayer, and oftentimes frustrating controls made the game much worse overall.

All of the Turtles look... interesting, but Mike looks the most bizarre.

Hah! Mikey looks like a freak!
Too bad glitches and such ruin the game when the concept and visuals are as awesome as they are.
