Video Review: Ducktales Remastered

WayForward’s remake of Capcom’s classic NES platformer manages to retain the magic that made Ducktales memorable as well as infuse plenty of new material to entice all newcomers.

Sunday Roundup: 9/1/13

New Games (9-1-13)Something must have been burning a hole in my pocket because I spent quite a few dollars on games this week. I say something because it’s not like I was sitting on a pile of money that I could spend willy nilly on whatever I wanted. At least I can take solace in knowing that I bought these games on sale and saved a few bucks that way. Yeah, we’ll go with that…

Worth Playing vol. 6: The Brawler Bunch

Double Dragon II ArtBrawlers, beat-em ups, side-scrollers (to an extent), and just plain arcade. Whatever you label the genre one thing is for sure: there are a ton of them out there!

Since I started playing video games on the NES there have been side-scrolling beat-em ups. My beginnings were with the Double Dragon series on the NES, which then evolved into the Genesis classics Golden Axe I and II. The love affair took off from there, with every generation producing unique and worthwhile entries in the genre. Though there has been a decline with the recent consoles, a spare brawler rises out of the ashes of nostalgia and captures my heart all over again. The following games aren’t in any sort of order. They’re all just games that are entirely worth your time.

Review: Dragon’s Crown

Dragons Crown CoverMultiplayer usually plays second fiddle to character progression and storyline in RPGs. Games like Castle Crashers and Dungeon Defenders are the exception to the rule, offering a solid RPG experience while giving players mountains of replayability with friends. These multiplayer romps are few and far between, and the ones worth your time even less so. Put together the addictiveness of a good co-op RPG with breathtaking visuals and a deep leveling and combat system and you have the trimmings for the next great action RPG.

Enter Dragon’s Crown, the newest RPG from Atlus and Vanillaware. Dragon’s Crown is an action RPG that successfully manages to not only play well, but be incredibly fun with friends and look damn good while doing it. Read the rest of this entry »

Sunday Roundup: 7/28/13

New Games (7-28-13)A trip back to Indiana for a wedding yielded great benefits for my collection. A trip to the local game store in Michigan City, followed by a visit to the oh so lucrative Disc Replay in Merrillville meant plenty of games were found in this the end of July. Oh, and a game from GameStop thrown in for good measure!!

Sunday Roundup: 6/23/13

New Games (6-23-13)

Wow, it’s been quite some time since the last Sunday Roundup! I believe one month might be a record for a draught between entries, but seeing as the last one was extravagant and this one is full of quality games and deals, I think the wait is justified. This week’s games come to us from a dying Blockbuster Video. It’s always sad to see a store closing for good, but honestly I was surprised there were any Blockbuster’s still around. On top of that, this store looked crazy old, like it had been around for decades. Anyway, a few good games this week, and all of them still newish.

Top Ten E3 2013 Announcements and Stories

E3 2013 LogoE3 2013 has come and gone. By many standards it was what we’d come to expect from the expo: new game announcements, news on all kinds of projects, and some exclusive trailers, demos, and videos. But just about everyone can agree that this year’s E3 went above and beyond the expectations of most in attendance. It wasn’t just about the games this year: it was about the consoles and how they affect the gamers. It was about a change in the way we game and how our hobby will change moving forward. It was about publishers making games that gamers wanted to play. And above all, it was about glorifying our hobby and giving us an undeniable outlet to look at and say without wavering that we’re proud to be gamers. These ten announcements are just the tip of the events that made E3 2013 so memorable, and what you should be most excited for. Read the rest of this entry »

E3 2013 Gameplay and Trailer Extravaganza

E3 2013 Logo Day 4The final day of the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo has come to an end. Every E3 supplies us with thrills and excitement over upcoming games, newly announced IPs, and titles that we otherwise would have never heard of before. With the addition this year of the new consoles (the Xbox One and PlayStation 4) and the mountains of talk and news they brought, this year’s E3 felt like a rollercoaster ride that was nothing but ups. Most of the news has died down as the show has dwindled to its last day, so I’m going to highlight a few games that stood out at this years show, and present you with gameplay trailers, content videos, and even some demos of the games that were shown off on the floor. If you can’t make it to E3 (one day I’ll make it there!) then this is your best shot of experiencing what it’s like in the madness. Read the rest of this entry »

E3 2013 Day 3 Recap

E3 2013 Logo Day 3Just one day left for this year’s E3! The major press conferences are over, so we can assume that there won’t be any more surprises this year (which is always sad, but there is so much to be happy about already!). With today over and tomorrow being the last for this year’s expo, most outlets are playing demons, interviewing developers, and finding out a few extra details about games and consoles. Tomorrow I’ll wrap up with a bunch of trailers, gameplay vids, and more, but for today, eat up these fine morsels of gaming goodness!
