Brawlers, beat-em ups, side-scrollers (to an extent), and just plain arcade. Whatever you label the genre one thing is for sure: there are a ton of them out there!
Since I started playing video games on the NES there have been side-scrolling beat-em ups. My beginnings were with the Double Dragon series on the NES, which then evolved into the Genesis classics Golden Axe I and II. The love affair took off from there, with every generation producing unique and worthwhile entries in the genre. Though there has been a decline with the recent consoles, a spare brawler rises out of the ashes of nostalgia and captures my heart all over again. The following games aren’t in any sort of order. They’re all just games that are entirely worth your time.

Mat was too busy hanging out with Puff Daddy to drop in on our latest Podcast, so Jett and I winged it by ourselves.
What did we talk about?
Street Fighter.
In anticipation of the upcoming Evo 2013 tournament (July 12 through July 14) we take a look back at the entire Street Fighter franchise. Included topics are our favorite games in the series, why Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game is worthwhile, and how Street Fighter will go into the future.

Capcom is a leader in the arcade fighting game scene and arguably the company behind the genre’s best titles. Iconic characters Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, among others have a dedicated place in many a gamers’ hearts, thanks in part to Street Fighter’s flawless blend of 2D combat, thrilling action, and tournament accessibility. Left in the shadows, perhaps fittingly, has been Capcom’s other 2D fighting series Darkstalkers. The gothic setting, fantasy-influenced roster of combatants and smooth fighting system à la Street Fighter has been dormant for over a decade. Thankfully Capcom has given the series a reboot in the form of Darkstalkers Resurrection, an HD port of the series last two arcade titles: Night Warriors: Darkstalkers’ Revenge and Darkstalkers 3. Free Play is a new series I’ve begun that takes a game and determines whether or not the game is worth your time. Each episode will spotlight one game on any system and in any genre. I’ll analyze the title, looking at the good parts and bad parts about it and judging if the game is worth it to play further. Best part for me, not only does this give me an exciting new feature to rant about, but it also lets me dig through my ever-growing catalog of games!
This episode features the Dreamcast shoot-em up, Gunbird 2.

It’s never too late to change. Even if your dead. Well, at least if you’re Sissel, the lead protagonist of Capcom’s Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective for the Nintendo DS (and recently released for the iOS). A puzzle game at its core but a crime story in its heart, Ghost Trick is unlike anything else out there. If you’ve been yearning for a fantastic story and creative gameplay,Ghost Trick is set to please.

Mega Man.
No other series has a spot closer to my heart than this one. I have the fondest of memories playing these games as a child (in fact I’d say Mega Man III was one of my first games I ever played), and these games still rank up there as some of the best I’ve ever played. Everyone has, or rather should, play any of the games in the classic Mega Man series. Yes, they’re that good.
Something I could never keep up with though was the incredible amount of Robot Masters the series has. With ten games in the numbered series, a handful of spin-offs, a portable series, and some games never released in America, there are over 120 Robot Masters for Mega Man to defeat. And those are just the ones in the classic series (so not including those in the X, Zero, ZX, Legends, Battle Network, or Star Force series).
Below I’ve done my best to compile an all-encompassing list of every Robot Master seen in what would be considered the classic series of games. I’ve separated out the games I’ve never heard of and the ones not released in America to lessen confusion. I’ve also listed each Robot Master’s name as well as any game they’ve appeared in. Clicking on the RM’s name links to their Wiki page for more information. If there’s one I’m missing or something I’ve left out let me know in the comments. Without further ado… Read the rest of this entry »

I’ll be the first one to say that a developer that puts out a new IP instead of a sequel deserves a bunch of credit. But I’ll be damned if there aren’t a good deal of games out there that I think should have been given the sequel treatment. I recently did some pondering a thought what a future would be like if a handful of my favorite video games were given a second, third, or even in some cases fourth installment. There’s hope out there, as some games I’d include on this list have already been green-lighted for a sequel (Kid Icarus; earlier Marvel vs. Capcom 3). I can wait for any other game, but these ten need to be made, and need to be made well.
