Worth Playing vol. 8: The Crossover Collection

Wolvering vs Ryu Art

Crossovers are the best fan service gamers can get. The blending of popular IPs into one unique game usually gets fans in a fever, finally being able to play as Sonic the Hedgehog in a Mario-themed game. Or finally being able to see who would win between the X-Man Wolverine and the Street Fighter Ryu. The opportunities for creating these scenarios is endless, but despite this we don’t get too many crossover games. Maybe it has something to do with publishing rights, company egos, or (most likely) money, but whatever the culprit may be, there are still a handful of crossover video games that are a hell of a lot of fun to play, and totally worth your time!

Review: Darkstalkers Resurrection

Darkstalkers Resurrection CoverCapcom is a leader in the arcade fighting game scene and arguably the company behind the genre’s best titles. Iconic characters Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, among others have a dedicated place in many a gamers’ hearts, thanks in part to Street Fighter’s flawless blend of 2D combat, thrilling action, and tournament accessibility. Left in the shadows, perhaps fittingly, has been Capcom’s other 2D fighting series Darkstalkers. The gothic setting, fantasy-influenced roster of combatants and smooth fighting system à la Street Fighter has been dormant for over a decade. Thankfully Capcom has given the series a reboot in the form of Darkstalkers Resurrection, an HD port of the series last two arcade titles: Night Warriors: Darkstalkers’ Revenge and Darkstalkers 3. Sunday Roundup: 3/11/12

I’ve been busy traveling around and enjoying my time at the Mall of America with some of my friends from college, so I’ve been away from the computer and thus away from this blog for some time. Fortunately, a big new city means a handful of new game stores to hit up. I was able to find a few good titles that I’ve added to my collection. Here they are for your viewing pleasure.

Review: Tekken 3D Prime Edition

The King of Iron Fist Tournament has returned to a Nintendo console after a decade long absence in the form of Tekken 3D Prime Edition for the 3DS. The entire ensemble of characters from Tekken 6 is playable and the game is a visual feast of gorgeous graphics that can fit in your pocket.  Local and online multiplayer, as well as the inclusion of the feature film Tekken: Blood Vengeance, round out the package. Few gameplay options and rough controls, however, make what could have been a flawless portable fighter another title that loses much of its quality in the console-to-handheld transition.

Sunday Roundup: 1/29/12

Another visit to Lafayette and another trip into Disc Replay. What that all boils down to is me finding new excuses to throw my money away. Personally it’s always a small victory every time I get to buy a new old game: I feel like I’m doing the game a personal favor by freeing it from the confines of the store rack. Also, there were some great deals at Best Buy this week: Lots of new game for just about every console were on clearance. And to make things better, I felt even more victorious this week since I wasn’t able to get any new titles the previous week! Huzzah!

Quick Hits: iPhone Gaming Madness

This past week (and as my phone currently told me today is still going on) EA had a massive sale on all their iPhone video games. Most games were $.99 and my girlfriend game me a $10 iTunes gift card, so picking up a few was an easy choice. I’ve played through a few and wanted to touch on each lightly, mayhaps to entice one of you to get one yourself.

Sunday Roundup: 12/25/11

Merry Christmas everyone!

Not really a tradition and more so my tastes don’t really change, every Christmas I usually receive a few video games from my family. This year was no exception, and I am eternally grateful and pleased that my loved ones get me any gifts, let alone games that I really want to play! Here’s what 2011 did for Jsick this Christmas.
