It’s that time of year again. E3 is this week, and with it will come the best and most exciting video game announcements, trailers, demos, and releases for the upcoming year. Many companies benchmark their entire remainder of the year on this show, making or breaking 2015 before it even finishes. Rampant speculation fuels the show year in and year out, and this year is no exception: a few days out of the show and there have already been announcements and rumors flying. You can’t be as venerable as the Final Fantasy series without spawning a few spinoffs. Usually the spinoff is a chance to use some of the same mechanics as the core series but make something drastically different: perhaps a totally different battle system, completely different approach to story, and sometimes just a celebration of the many years of success the source series has entertained. Regardless of the influence, there have been dozens of spinoffs and pseudo-sequels for Final Fantasy games, and none more awesome than the ten below.
The Kingdom Hearts series has become one of the most well-regarded RPG franchises. Spanning over 10 years and seven unique games, it’s safe to say blending Disney with Final Fantasy has worked out well.

Featuring complete versions of Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix and Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories, as well as nearly three hours of cinematic storytelling taken from Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, HD 1.5 Remix is a compilation of games for newcomers to the series as well as a beautiful retelling of stories for series veterans. It was 10 years ago that gamers first picked up the keyblade, battled with Mickey, Donald, and Goofy, and met the eager hero Sora in the very first Kingdom Hearts. The newest iteration of the game, Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, is a step in the right direction for the action RPG series, introducing new gameplay mechanics, characters, and storylines. Though it’s not Kingdom Hearts 3 that gamers have been so eagerly craving, at least it has a 3 in the title. That counts, right?
