Modern Classics: Tekken 3

Tekken 3 CoverFighting games are usually broken down into two categories: 2D fighting and 3D fighting. In the 3D fighting field I think of three games being the kings of the arena: Dead or Alive, Virtua Fighter, and Tekken. Of those three I’ve played and enjoyed them all but I have had the most love and fun with Tekken. Though I played the first two games it wasn’t until Tekken 3 that I really started to dig deep into the series. The characters, the music, the smooth animations, the visuals, and the combat all make Tekken 3 one of the PlayStation’s best games. Yeah, one of the best games for the entire system.

Modern Classics: Picross 3D

The concept is simple: you’re given a row of cubes that seemingly form a simple shape. But etch away specific cubes and you start to reveal a hidden picture. That’s it. That’s the entire setup for Picross 3D, a puzzle game for the Nintendo DS released in 2010. With the perfect blend of easy and difficult, fun and challenging, and simply addictive nature, Picross 3D is one of the best puzzle games on the DS, and one of the best puzzle games to come out this side of Tetris.

Modern Classics: DDRMAX2: Dance Dance Revolution

Once you feel the groove it’s hard to stop. As is the case with my recent reintroduction to the Dance Dance Revolution series. My previous Modern Classics entry was on the first PS2 DDR game, DDRMAX. The newest entry is none other than the sequel DDRMAX2. With more music, more step patterns, more modes, and more ways to get your groove on, MAX2 is one of the greatest games in the entire series. Too bad then that it was the last game that got it all right.

Modern Classics: DDRMAX: Dance Dance Revolution

It’s been a long time since I created the Modern Classics library, and I’ve completely neglected it over these pasts months. With that in mind I set out to reinvent the series, and I wanted to start with a game that easily fit into the Modern Classic criteria:
It has to be a fun, new, innovative, or personal favorite of myself and gamers;
Leaving behind a legacy for the video game world to remember is a plus, and;
There has to be something here that I can teach you about the game.
And what did I come up with? Dance Dance Revolution. And very quickly, actually.

Yearly Roundup: 2011

As 2011 comes to an end, I thought it would be a cool idea to look back at the year in games. Specifically, the year in games added to my ever-growing library. If you’re a frequent visitor to the site (I greatly hope you are!) you’ll no doubt know I do a weekly blog post about my newest games. So below I’ve collected every game I added this year (well, really only half-year, because I started this blog in late July). I’ve also linked any relevant posts I’ve done about said games, like reviews, Modern Classics, and gameplay videos. Enjoy the small retrospective, and here’s to another fantastic year in gaming in 2012!

Modern Classics: Dance Dance Revolution Disney Mix

Wha-Wha-What?! Dance Dance Revolution: Disney Mix? Yeah, it exists, and I was more than happy to grab the game earlier this week and pop it in to the ol’ PS2. Easily one of the hardest to find DDR games available in the US, DDR Disney mix offers up the same DDR dancing experience just with a Mickey Mouse twist. What more could you want?! Well… apparently you can want more content.

Modern Classics: Marvel vs. Capcom

Capcom’s Vs. series is such a great franchise. Spider-Man vs. Ryu. Gambit vs. Mega Man. War Machine vs. Captain Commando! The frantic action and smooth animation make the game stand out amongst its competitors; there’s really nothing else quite like Marvel vs. Capcom.

Modern Classics: Castle Shikigami 2

Vertical scrolling shoot-em up action, Castle Shikigami 2 probably flew under your radar. And for obvious reasons. Terrible voice acting, simple gameplay, and a sure fire option to destroy your TV when playing! Check out this game in my latest video entry into the Modern Classics library.

Modern Classics: Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter

The precursor to the Marvel vs. Capcom series, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter was a good game that received a lame port on the PS1. Join me as I take a look back on this classic fighter.

Modern Classics: Hot Shots Golf

I can really only think of about three arcade golf games: The literal arcade golf game Golden Tee, the Mario Golf series for the Nintendo 64 and GameCube, and Hot Shots Golf for the Playstation. There must be a reason so many games exist in this series. I take a look back at the first title in the series and look at what makes the game so great. Here’s a hint: It’s the golf.
