Review: Urban Trial Freestyle

Urban Trial Freestyle LogoIf imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Urban Trial Freestyle (3DS) has a love affair with Trial HD (Xbox Live Arcade). Though both are remarkably similar and it is easy to lump them together under the same genre, several subtle differences separate the two games. The 3DS version of Urban Trial Freestyle has some advantages over its PSN brethren, but the fact of the matter remains that Tate Multimedia’s game is living in the shadows of RedLynx’s Trials HD and its sequel.

Review: Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed CarIt seems even Sonic the Hedgehog, the “fastest thing alive,” enjoys getting behind the wheel from time to time. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is Sonic and company’s second racing outing after 2010’s Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing. The majority of the game is similar to the first: you can play as Sonic and many other familiar Sega faces as you race around tracks based on popular Sega franchises. In short it’s another case of “whatever Mario can do, Sonic can do better” from Sega. But Mario Kart this is not. Read the rest of this entry »

Top Ten Games That Need A Sequel

I’ll be the first one to say that a developer that puts out a new IP instead of a sequel deserves a bunch of credit. But I’ll be damned if there aren’t a good deal of games out there that I think should have been given the sequel treatment. I recently did some pondering a thought what a future would be like if a handful of my favorite video games were given a second, third, or even in some cases fourth installment. There’s hope out there, as some games I’d include on this list have already been green-lighted for a sequel (Kid Icarus; earlier Marvel vs. Capcom 3). I can wait for any other game, but these ten need to be made, and need to be made well.

Sunday Roundup: 1/8/12

The first roundup of the new year, and it’s a rare one for me. I am not one to buy game for systems haphazardly, though it may appear otherwise. I usually stick to my plan and buy games to add to my collection. But how often do you find complete in box Nintendo Entertainment System games? Freaking never!

Review: TrackMania 2: Canyon

When I think of racing games, two distinct sub-genres come to mind: arcade racers like Crusin’ USA or San Francisco Rush and simulation games like Gran Turismo. I tend to steer toward the arcade racers for their fast, easy gameplay over the more complex gameplay of simulation racers. And then there’s the TrackMania series, which blends elements of these two sub-genres. The TrackMania series features fast paced arcade style racing, an intricate level editor, and an online hub to connect racers from around the world. With improved graphics, streamlined editing tools for novice editors, and a strong online component make TrackMania 2 a good sequel that racing fans will enjoy.

Sunday Roundup: 9/18/11

So only the one new game this week, after last weeks mega haul. It’s an unlikely genre for me, since I don’t really play racing games, but so far the game has been rather enjoyable. Let’s take a look…
