The 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo is right around the corner, and what better way to get hyped up for the event than by speculating what the conference might have to offer? I did a list like this last year and came away with almost one correct prediction, so maybe this year will be more realistic (though I highly doubt it). Even so, getting just one of these to be true would be fantastic and would totally make my E3. One can hope… Read the rest of this entry »

Every year brings new innovations to the medium, new games to get us excited, sad, frightened, or happy, and new games to look forward to. 2013 will possibly see the release, or at the very least see the announcement, of brand new consoles from Sony and Microsoft. That means 2013 could be the last year in the current generation of games. With the burden of an entire generation on it’s shoulders, as well as next generation systems already released by Nintendo, 2013 could be one of the better years in gaming. While there will be dozens of games adored and loved by gamers this year, here are 10 titles that I’m particularly excited to see and play. Each of these games range in target audience, platform, genre, and concept, but all of them are shaping up to be future best sellers, award winners, and possible candidates for truly memorable and classic video games. It’s October, and that means it’s time to watch those scary horror flicks, grab a costume to scare or adore your neighbors, and eat lots of candy. While you might be in horror overload with all the Halloween themed stores and pumpkin spice lattes on every corner, perhaps all you need is a good dose of frighteningly adorable video games to get you back in the spirit of the season. Just in time for Halloween, here are 13 horrifyingly cute video games for you to play between now and All Hallows’ Eve.

The Pokemon series has a lot of tradition that has been seen in every game in the main series: you get one of three Pokemon at the beginning of the game, each of which is either a fire, grass, or water type; you battle through eight gym battles to collect badges; an evil organization is up to no good trying to harm everyone’s Pokemon; apparently you, a young child, are the only one who can somehow manage to collect and/or see every Pokemon in the land, even when capable adults can be found everywhere.
But you know what, that’s what made the game’s great. They were a blast to play because they were so fun and simple. I bring this up though to say that I am desperately craving something new from the franchise. I know Nintendo has to stick to some tradition with each game, but switching things up a bit can make a huge difference. I’m not even going to fault the game for having some ridiculous Pokemon either (I’m looking at you, Trubbish!). I’m sure it’s hard to come up with new species of tiny creatures after you’ve run through the hundreds they have so far. Here’s some examples of things that will make the next Pokemon game amazing: Read the rest of this entry »

Now that E3 has come and gone, it’s time for just about every gaming journalists, websites, magazines, and anything covering the newest technology to rank the best of the best from this year’s convention. Seeing as only one of my previous predictions kind of came true, E3 was sort of straightforward and down to business. Still though, there’s plenty to be excited about this coming year, and these ten entries are more than enough to satiate even the hungriest of gamers.

What can be better than owning a ton of video games?
Owning a one video game that has a TON of video games all packed in to one disc!
The game compilation is an ideal way for publishers to re-release games and have gamers pay for them all over again, but it is also a great way for gamers to experience titles they may have missed or otherwise skipped over from years past. While some packages are just thrown together without any thought, others are done well and are deserving of your dollar. Here is my list of video game compilations that are very much worth checking out.

Why do people just stand still, looking solemnly into your eyes with a cold gaze of death?
Or how about explaining why sleeping outside on the ground can miraculously heal any and all wounds, no matter the severity?
And what about no one seeming to care that there are people carrying around weapons and ammunition to initiate a small war at any given second?
These are the questions that are never asked when playing a Role-Playing Game, yet they are always there in the back of your head, eating away at your thoughts long after the console has been turned off. Most of these issues are just components of the RPG itself, but some of them simply don’t make any damn sense. Here are ten unexplained, bizarre, and truly peculiar themes in RPGs.

I did it for one of my favorite genres (the fighter) and I’ve got to do it for another genre close to my heart, the puzzle game. Whether you’re connecting colored gems, filling in gaps, solving brain teaser, or shooting shiny balls at other shiny balls, the puzzle game is a staple to the video game community that isn’t going anywhere. And with so many excellent games to sink your teeth into it can be hard to determine which games offer the best challenge, the most addictive gameplay, and the most satisfaction upon completion. Vol 3 of Worth Playing is here, so let’s get this underway.

I’ll be the first one to say that a developer that puts out a new IP instead of a sequel deserves a bunch of credit. But I’ll be damned if there aren’t a good deal of games out there that I think should have been given the sequel treatment. I recently did some pondering a thought what a future would be like if a handful of my favorite video games were given a second, third, or even in some cases fourth installment. There’s hope out there, as some games I’d include on this list have already been green-lighted for a sequel (Kid Icarus; earlier Marvel vs. Capcom 3). I can wait for any other game, but these ten need to be made, and need to be made well.

I’ve been writing video game reviews for over two years now, and there’s been some things I’ve learned over that span of time. I don’t mean better writing techniques, for which I’ve picked up quite a few, but rather the things you don’t think about until they rear their head. Since not everyone has written reviews before, I wanted to take some time to reflect on my time spent writing, and give some insight on what it takes to be a freelance video game reviewer.
