Sunday Roundup: 5/5/13

05 May

New Games (5-5-13)Rather than give you the full intro for the Sunday Roundup, I’m going to direct you to an article I wrote a while back about Goodwill. I’ve spoken at length about Goodwill and thrift shops being a game hunters friend. I’ve reminisced about how I found rare games or totally insane deals while sifting through the racks, and I’ve always accented these stories with the one or two exceptional finds I’ve found (i.e. Diablo on PS1). Well, I’m tacking on another title to that list this week!

Black and White 2 CoverBlack & White 2
PC
Release Date: October 7th, 2005
Purchased at: Goodwill (Sunnyvale, CA – $10)

This particular Goodwill is extremely close to our new apartment and was kept in excellent shape. Oh, and they had an absolutely amazing jewel case full of video games! First this week is the PC title Black & White 2, which was developed at Lionhead Studios by none other than Peter Molyneux, the creator of the Fable series. Black & White 2 is a strategy/god game in which you play as a god that has to expand followers on the planet. It’s unique and I remember hearing enough good things about it when it released that I’ve had my eye on getting a copy for some time now. Not a great deal at ten bucks, but in good condition and complete I had to grab it!

Legend of Zelda Collectors Edition CoverThe Legend of Zelda: Collector’s Edition
GameCube
Release Date: November 17th, 2003
Purchased at: Goodwill (Sunnyvale, CA – $6)

Oh. My. God.
Let me tell you, my heart was racing when I saw this game behind the case! For starters, you could originally only get this game if you either bought a GameCube it came bundled with (which was around the time Wind Waker released), or renewed your subscription to Nintendo Power. Included on the disc are full versions of The Legend of Zelda (NES), Zelda II (NES), Ocarina of Time (N64), and Majora’s Mask (N64), as well as playable demo of Wind Waker. The content is astounding and the means of getting it was challenging, so it was an instant collector’s item (if the name didn’t give that much away). It regularly retails for over $45, and is one of the GameCube’s most sought after releases. I’ve been trying to find this game, literally just find it, complete or otherwise, in the wild for years. YEARS! And here it is, in my collection now after all this time, complete, and for a blasphemous price. I couldn’t be happier! This one is going down in my “Reasons to shop at Goodwill” list of finds.

PN 03 CoverP.N. 03
GameCube
Release Date: September 9th, 2003
Purchased at: Goodwill (Sunnyvale, CA – $6)

Not a particularly expensive game but a difficult one to find that I was thrilled to pick up! P.N. 03 (Product Number 03) is a GameCube exclusive action game developed by Capcom. I really don’t know too much about the gameplay, but I do remember being fed propaganda via Nintendo Power about the game’s awesomeness and have wanted to try it since. I think the game went by with little fanfare and wasn’t too well received, but the uniqueness of the title, and the fact that it’s a GameCube exclusive (by Capcom, no less), makes me want to own it even more!

That’s it for all the new games added this week, but the trip to Goodwill is far from over. I think someone decided one day they just weren’t going to keep their GameCube because there were over a dozen GCN games in great condition along with the ones mentioned above. I picked up a few more titles, all for $6:

Soul Calibur 2
Kirby Air Ride
Legend of Zelda; The Wind Waker
Resident Evil
Eternal Darkness
Shadow of the Colossus
(PS2)

I already own a copy of each of these games so they don’t quite qualify for being fully listed on the Sunday Roundup, but damn! Those are some fantastic deals! Wind Waker usually sells for over $40 alone, and most of the other games sell for over $30. Financially, this was a great week!

Laters,
Jsick

$6 for that Zelda collectors edition is crazy. Tremendous find, congrats. I need to hit up Goodwill and see what I can find.

I try to stop in at Goodwill’s every few weeks, just to see if any new games or books have come in that catch my eye. More often than not I walk away empty handed. But for times like these, time when I can be shocked by what I find… that’s why I keep going back again and again.

Hopefully Black & White 2 still runs on my PC! Believe it or not, the game’s already 8 years old!
