Sunday Roundup: 6/23/13

23 Jun

New Games (6-23-13)

Wow, it’s been quite some time since the last Sunday Roundup! I believe one month might be a record for a draught between entries, but seeing as the last one was extravagant and this one is full of quality games and deals, I think the wait is justified. This week’s games come to us from a dying Blockbuster Video. It’s always sad to see a store closing for good, but honestly I was surprised there were any Blockbuster’s still around. On top of that, this store looked crazy old, like it had been around for decades. Anyway, a few good games this week, and all of them still newish.

Bioshock Infinite CoverBioshock Infinite
Xbox 360
Release Date: March 26th, 2013
Purchased at: Blockbuster Video (San Jose, CA – $27)

I had seen the listing on Craigslist for this particular Blockbuster store closing for about a month. Being around these types of clearance deals before I decided to wait until the last week the store was open (today is the final day for the store, actually) and hopefully snag the greatest deals possible. The tradeoff for this though is that the quality and quantity of games leftover is usually low. So imagine my surprise when a few dozen copies of Bioshock Infinite were sitting on the shelf for half list price! Needless to say, I picked it up immediately and deemed the wait and trip worth it already. I’ve started to play the game too, and the visuals and atmosphere are phenomenal  I caught wait to play the rest of this one!

Anarchy Reigns CoverAnarchy Reigns
Xbox 360
Release Date: January 8th, 2013
Purchased at: Blockbuster Video (San Jose, CA – $15)

Anarchy Reigns would have totally flown past me if it wasn’t for a particular review that deemed the game similar to Power Stone. The game is by Sega and is a frantic beat ’em up style fighter that I’m hoping actually is like Power Stone: that’s a wonderful game to be modeled after! There’s plenty of multiplayer potential here as well, so I’m looking to play this one with Laura. Possibly this coming week!

Ni no Kuni CoverNi no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
PS3
Release Date: January 22nd, 2013
Purchased at: Blockbuster Video (San Jose, CA – $20)

Whoa man, Ni no Kuni for just $20! The PS3 exclusive JRPG created by Level-5 in conjunction with Japanese animation powerhouse Studio Ghibli is apparently one of the prettiest RPGs of this generation. I would expect as much from the house that Miyazaki built! The animation, characters, visuals, and even sound from all the trailers and videos I’ve seen make me want to play and experience this game so much I couldn’t pass up this deal. I’m expecting this game to be long, so I don’t know when I’ll finish. Regardless, it’s high on my priority list, believe me!

Laters,
Jsick

Ni No Kuni is glorious fun. I got a little tired of the seemingly endless errands (side quests) near the end game though. When I start thinking, “I just need to finish this”, I know it’s time to focus on the main game and get it done. Otherwise it ends up in my backlog of unfinished games. But I played for 55 hours or so when I finished the game. It’s totally worth it.

That sounds excellent actually, haha, all those side quests! I’d totally do all those side quests too, even if I could taste the ending. I need to experience everything!!

The errands are a lot of fun, and a nice break from the main game (and are required to get some good abilities). I did them up until near the very end (after about 50 hours of play) until one of the errands required you to bring an NPC 3 familiars, but they were metamorphosed familiars, so you needed to find the base familiars (if you didn’t already have them), then level them up enough (at least 30 levels) to morph them into the form he wants. That’s a lot of grinding. At that point I was mostly done with doing any errands. 🙂

Wow, those are some REALLY nice deals. Enjoy Bioshock — I just started my second playthrough of that.

I’m really enjoying it so far. I know I’m barely anywhere into it yet, but from what I’ve played I’ve liked it a lot.
