Sunday Roundup: 12/4/2011

04 Dec

Glorious day!

As luck would have it, a brand new, independently owned used video game store opened up right here in my home town! What are the odds?! No, I’m serious: what are they? Who is honestly opening up a used game store to rival that of Disc Replay or GameStop?

Well, whatever his reasons may be, I for one am exceedingly happy to have a carrier of old games located in my home town finally. I was happy to be one of his first customers on his first day. Let’s get on with things then, shall we?

Innocent Life: A Futuristic Harvest Moon
Playstation 2
Release Date: February 12th, 2008

The title says it all: “A Futuristic Harvest Moon.” I’ve known about this game for some time now, and I’ve actually found it before for the PSP (of which it was originally released) at GameStop for only $5, but I really wanted this PS2 version. For no other reason than it being on the PS2. So the Harvest Moon series of games consists are all farm simulation titles, which have you taking over an abandoned/downtrodden farm and bringing it back to prosperity. Innocent Life is apparently set in the future, where things are always cool. Can’t wait to try this puppy out!

Steambot Chronicles
Playstation 2
Release Date: June 23rd, 2006

I remember seeing this game in advertisements in EGM and/or GamePro and thought it looked pretty cool. It’s an Atlus RPG, so that means it’ll probably be heavy on story and lighter on action, but will still be a joy. The art style looks decent as well. I really can’t say much more about this, because I know very little about it.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire
Playstation 1
Release Date: 1996

Again, don’t really know much about this title, but I have heard of the series (and the nod to history the title is referring too). A quick glance at WikiPedia says the game was originally released on the SNES, which I’m sure won’t help the game’s cause of being more than just a port.

 Devil Dice
Playstation 1
Release Date: September 23rd, 1998

I have heard about this game as well, and it is supposed to be a fairly decent puzzle title. The goal is to arrange, rotate, and navigate through a field of dice, trying to put them in correct order, whatever order that may be. Sounds interesting enough to me! I actually only heard about the game a few weeks ago when looking at other puzzles titles and then thought I should pick it up next time I see it. I guess that was going to be less than a month later :p

 Warhammer: Dark Omen
Playstation 1
Release Date: March 31st, 1998

I know little about the Warhammer series aside from it being a table-top mini figure game that has always intrigued me. I saw this title for only five bucks and thought I’d give it a nice home. Screens make the game look… dated… but I’ll try to get around to it at some point. I have another Warhammer game already, Shadow of the Horned Rat, and this game is the sequel to that one. Cool.

 Crash Team Racing
Playtation 1
Release Date: September 30th, 1999

Kart racers. It all started with the original Mario Kart, and then before you knew it, every series had a Kart Racer: Star Wars, Jak & Daxter, fucking Mortal Kombat even! But the Crash Bandicoot racer is supposed to be pretty good. At least it was good enough to get a sequel, too. Fortunately though, Naughty Dog has steered away (ha, get it?) from the genre and went on to make the Uncharted series.

 Brain Age
Nintendo DS
Release Date: April 16th, 2006

Now, I’m still not sure if this game will be mine or not. My nephew is into games, and he’s only nine years old, so I thought about getting him this one. I am going to try it out myself and see if it’s too hard for him or just right, then I’ll decide if it’s his or not. Regardless, I’ve always wanted to try this series: it has somehow remained hidden from me for almost five years now. But no longer!

Laters,
Jsick

Damn, that’s pretty awesome that you have a new video game store in town. Another strong batch of games you’ve got there this week. Crash Team Racing is a blast, and it still holds up well today. Brain Age is a cool little game, too, especially once you start to compete against your friends to see who can get the lowest age.

I remember Brain Age being a pretty popular game when it came out: parents were apparently going crazy for it. That makes me wonder why there hasn’t been much from the series as of late…

Jealous of your new used game store! I found one an hour away recently, but haven’t had a free Saturday to make the drive. Hopefully soon. Crash Team Racing is a solid kart racer; I always liked how it had an open world to explore before jumping into a race or boss fight.

I wish that more used game stores existed, but I’m afraid there’s just not a large market for them to survive. I hope you can get over to your store sometime soon :p. thanks for commenting, too.
